Twilight Kills Indie Rock. Long Live Indie Rock!
Is anything sacred these days? As if I need another reason to dislike Twilight. The soundtrack to New Moon has been released recently (early) and to my horror it features some of the chief darlings of the only good music around today. Death Cab, Killers, Black Rebel Motorcycles, Editors, Bon Iver and St. Vincent are among them. As if that wasn’t enough, apparently Death Cab wrote their song specifically for the film. I hope you’re happy Ben Gibbard! Shudder. I would not have though much of it if it were only one song. That happens, it’s called life. But for all of them to hold hands and jump ship in synchronicity? That just leaves me baffled.
Let’s get a few things straight. Despite the post title, I’m not one of those ‘fans’ that loves a band just because it’s hip to. I’ve never understood Grizzly Bear and Thom Yorke I couldn’t care less about. I am definitely ALL about the music. That doesn’t mean that associations between seemingly pure and free music with filthy commercial garbage should not make my stomach turn. There was quite a heated debate over at Stereogum. The argument that a band’s gotta make money falls flat here. There has always been ways to cash in… both pure and ugly. There is always a dirty way to earn a living and most people consider it below them. I would also like to rebute the argument that it would open up the tweens to actual good music. I’m sure it will for some though it will most certainly go over the heads of ninety percent of them. I’m mostly disgusted that that is left up to the movie industry to control what children are subject to. And it’s appalling that people will simply admit it, lay down and take it. My siblings have not the greatest taste in music, but through my sharing my music with them, they have fallen in love with folk and classical genres without any force. My little brother discovered Bad Company on his own when all his school mates listen to Nickleback trash. Have yet to hear this album and I’m a little nervous.
This could end up one of the greatest albums of the year, but it will never shake the fact that it is a soundtrack to one of the lowest forms of entertainment.
Now I’ve got to go and wash my hands, I feel dirty.
[Update edit] Further proof Death Cab was knee deep in this. The song is nothing short of fantastic, but the video induces vomit.
